Bankfoot House, Glasshouse Mountains, 2009

Sunshine Coast Regional Council

Bankfoot House enjoys a picturesque location alongside the Old Gympie Road in Queensland's Glass House Mountains. Established in 1868 as a roadside accommodation house on the new road from Brisbane to the Gympie gold rush, it is the oldest surviving building in the Glass House Mountains.

Bankfoot House is steeped in family history. Three generations of the same family occupied the house for over 130 years before the house and all its contents were sold to the Caloundra City Council in 2004. The council saw benefit in sponsoring a volunteer community group to assist in researching, cataloguing and preserving all the items in the house.

This long-term project involved the development of the Management Plan for the house and the strategy for cataloguing and caring for all objects, photos and documents in the collection.

Establishment of the Community Group (Friends of Bankfoot House) and governance for the Council Community Partnership were accomplished early in the project. A number of successful grant applications were also made to conduct senstive repairs to the building. A suitable database was sought and established for the care of collections. A comprehensive and engaging website was created to promote the heritage partnership initiative.
